Whether you are designing your logo for the first time, or going through a rebranding process, you have a lot of key decisions to make in creating a logo that perfectly captures the essence of your business. But there’s no need to stress. If you remember these three tips when designing your logo, you can’t go wrong.
Simple Colors
The best rule of thumb for any design is to keep it simple. Things like busy patterns and a logo crammed with text only make it confusing for a customer to look at. An area where a lot of people make a mistake is by incorporating too many crazy, clashing colors. It’s better to have just two or three colors in your logo, unless it features a mascot. Those colors should contrast enough to stand out from each other without looking disjointed. Take a look at an artists color wheel to get the right idea about contrast.
Balance
A good logo design will have a balance of elements. In particular, it’s pleasing to the eye to have symmetry in an image. Also consider playing with proportion to create balance, such as the size of one element of your logo against another. This is why you see a lot of logos that are in circles, because it creates that sense of a cohesive design.
Negative Space
Often overlooked is the parts of your logo that aren’t technically there. This negative space can be an important element you your design. You can use the spaces between the letters in your company name to make a picture, like the hidden arrow in the FedEx logo. Negative space is also an opportunity to experiment with proportions, or to use asymmetry.
